In order for us to communicate freely with athletes from other countries, we were trained by professional teachers of foreign languages, who were present at all training camps in Kharkov, and in Georgia, and in Armenia in Moscow passed exams. I did not really strive for this study, which I regret now - in the modern world, knowledge of a foreign language would not have prevented.

But you and Fesenko were not on this list? The official leader of the national team was Salnikov - thanks to his titles. But in everyday life he was a closed man. At the same time, Sergey Fesenko was a Komsomol of the team, her soul. I was called a vice-captain. Together organized all the events, listened to our opinion. But if in the midst of athletes we enjoyed respect, then the coach was not in leading positions.

Because of this, Vaitskhovsky did not take us for many foreign fees. But at the Olympiad there was no discipline and, given my latest results, the team’s coaches set me to swim m. Maybe in some sports the boycott influenced high results. But not in all. Not everywhere American athletes dominated. Their crown views were a man’s swimming, athletics. As for our swimmers, there was one competitor from the United States, but it is not known how he would speak in Moscow.

In the ranking, according to the results of the year, our results remained in the first and second places. In addition, at the World Cup, where all the strongest world swimmers participated, I won the gold medal and proved that my success at the Olympics was not accidental. For the first place they gave rubles, the second -, the third - given the income tax, I received "in the hands of" Soviet rubles.

Parents remained until the Olympics closed in Moscow. Therefore, in Zhdanov, then no one knew the city about my arrival, except for my close friends - deputy chief of the airport Anatoly Stalev and Alexander Omelchenko. Now I regret a little that I did not report to the city about his arrival. I have no doubt that they would have a grandiose meeting at the airport.

But when they learned about my stay in the city, something incredible began. Celebrations took place at the highest level. The plan of events and visiting various enterprises were painted on a separate sheet. It indicated all the subtleties, up to the one who meets me, where they are planted. The days were scheduled in minutes. For me, a twenty -year -old young man, all these troubles were very pleasant.

And the very first congratulatory telegram came from a taxi fleet from the chief engineer, now the chairman of the football federation of Mariupol Alexander Ivanovich Tokhtar. A gift of taxi drivers - a samovar - still stands in my kitchen. Unfortunately, he could not travel to the national team with me, so for five years I was trained by the first coach of Sergei Fesenko - Vera Grigoryevna Smelova.

A personal coach was needed at the training camp that occupied us a year. Of course, you cannot compare with today's salaries. At that time I had a bet. It lasted up to a year - the end of my sports career. They offered to become a second sparring number with Vadim Yaroshchuk from Krivoy Rog. Thinking, I decided to leave, freeing the way to the young.

In addition, family circumstances influenced. If so, will Ukrainian athletes go there, because they used to protect the colors of one country?It is possible that the Russians will make some holiday for their own. On July 20, all Olympians were collected for greeting in Donetsk. By the way, there was a case in Donetsk when one man, having learned that I was Sidorenko, was very happy.

It turns out that during my golden swim at the Olympics, he, then an ordinary armed forces, stood in a cordon. As they say, the world is crowded. He was the world champion, Europe. I have not been actively swimming in the next five years. Vaitskhovsky then said: either you get married, or leave sports. Interestingly, the wedding was celebrated with the whole team in our Melkino.

Then she graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Institute of Physical Culture and Sports. They invited us to this city then, gave an apartment, but we decided to stay in Mariupol. Before the birth of a child, she worked in an industrial technical school as a teacher of physical education.
