He did not know his father, his parents divorced, mother worked as a librarian in the engine depot of the October Railway. Since childhood, the boy found out what need and hunger are. He dreamed of traveling to the distant lands. When the war began, G. Snegirev and his mother, grandmother and grandfather went into evacuation in the Volga steppes.

Returning to Moscow, he studied at school, then at a craft school. At 13, the future writer begins to work as a student of the drug at the Department of Ichthyology of Moscow University. They studied the life of fish, and Gene Snegirev plunged into the interests of biologists. Then at the Faculty of Biology was taught by world -famous scientists: N. Pudvilchikov, A.

Druzhinin, P. Schmidt and others. The teenager studied a lot from them, especially G. Snegirev became attached to Vladimir Dmitrievich Lebedev, who replaced his father. Lebedev, later a professor, then just returned from the war. Together with V. Lebedev, Gennady went to the Lake of Lake. They lived on the island, watched fish, went out to night fishing with fishermen. Soon G. He treated fish from rubella, fungi and other diseases, and even for the first time brought in the aquarium the Far Eastern Limneus shrimp. In the age of 17, Snegirev went to work as a beast in the zoocenter. Despite the serious disease, which tied it to a hospital bed for a whole year, he decided to go into ice voyage. Together with the ichthyological detachment, Gennady headed on the Vityaz expeditionary ship from Vladivostok through an unhurried Songark Strait in the Pacific to the shores of Chukotka.

The expedition studied the deep -sea fish of Okhotsk and Bering the seas. From the expedition, the young researcher returned healthy. Now he was interested in beavers: for a whole year he caught these animals in the swamps of Belarus and in commodity wagons transported them to acclimatize to the tributary of the Irtysh - Nazim River. I watched how they settled and live, and later described these animals in the cycle of stories “Beaver hut”, “Beaver watchman”, “Beaver”.

Then, with a geological expedition, G. Snegirev went to the central Sayan, to Tuva. In the year, he left on a trip with Lebedev on a rescue boat, without a motor, a sail, without a stock of food, having only salt, sugar, spinning for fishing and carbine for hunting. Travelers for two summers made an experimental flight to survival along the Siberian River Lena. They not only survived, but also studied the environmental changes in the Yakut taiga and the Lena River.

Later, G. Snegirev wrote about this journey the book “On the Cold River”. There were still many travels: to the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, the White Sea ... There were many professions - with the deer of the Chukotka, Snegirev drove deer, worked as a huntsman in the reserve of Southern Turkmenistan - but not one of them became a matter of life, as well as observations of the animal world, poured into scientific works that predicted colleagues from the university.

The work of Gennady Snegirev became books that were born from oral stories to friends and comrades in the sports section. His acquaintance - the poetess Veronika Tushnova - took the stories on the radio, where they were immediately taken and put on air. At this time, the editors of Detgiza were looking for new interesting writers, on the radio they advised them to pay attention to Gennady Snegirev.

His first book - “Inhabited Island” - was published about the animal world of the Pacific Ocean. The stories of G. Snegirev are not similar to one another, although they are united by a common theme and style of presentation. He has lyrical sketches, detailed poetic descriptions of nature, habits and animal life. Their main meaning is that after the author readers learn to see. In the novel “Mendum” there is a chapter, which is called “I am learning to see”, telling how, following the hunter - the Tuvanz Mendum - the hero of the story wandered around the taiga.

Before that, he almost did not meet animals, the Mendum taught him to stare at the taiga intently and understand the meaning of what was revealed to his careful look. Snegirev writes about nature and animals, but his stories are densely inhabited by people. The reader for a moment is not left alone with the forest and the field - he is directed by the lyrical hero of the narrative.

The short stories of Gennady Yakovlevich are called poetry in prose. Moreover, the kinship of poetry with prose is not external, but inner, enclosed in the poetic acceptance of the world. In the stories and stories of Snegirev Taiga and Tundra, the desert and the ocean, are shown by the eyes of amazed and interested.
