Maria Levitsky biography
Levitskaya Maria Afanasyevna Maria Afanasyevna Levitskaya - a man of enormous talent, complex fate and limitless devotion to science. Voronezh local historians call this amazing woman "Voronezh Sklodovskaya-Kuri." The physician-physicist Maria Sklodovskaya-Kuri was convinced of the great beauty of science. Maria Afanasyevna Levitskaya could say the same thing. Born in the year in Tashkent, in the backyards of the Russian Empire, Maria Afanasyevna became one of the first Russian female physicists.
After graduating from the year in St. Petersburg the highest women's courses, Maria Levitskaya continued her education at Berlin and Gettingen Universities.
The student of the great physicist Max Planck, Maria Afanasyevna devoted her whole life to science. Its “elements” was the study of electromagnetic waves and the structure of the atomic nucleus. In the year, at the invitation of the rector of Voronezh State University, she arrives in Voronezh, where she was offered the position of professor of the Department of Theoretical Physics.
Of course, someone after European capitals life in a provincial Voronezh may seem gray, but not to Maria Afanasyevna! Indeed, in Voronezh she was provided with the most favorable conditions for work. A brilliant master of a laboratory experiment, widely known for his discoveries in the field of physics of electromagnetic vibrations, it is actively undertaken for pedagogical activity and organizational work to create an electromagnetic vibration department.
Then there was a Great Patriotic War. Teachers and students went on evacuation in Elabuga. But, as soon as it was possible to return to Voronezh, and continue scientific work, Maria Afanasyevna immediately took advantage of her. In August, Voronezh University began its work as a whole, although only ruins remained from the old building. For Maria Levitskaya, the time of unprecedented activity comes.
In the year, she will write down in her diary: “They allowed the specialty“ Nuclear Physics ”. It is necessary to prepare a new course - a course of nuclear phenomena. Do I have enough strength? No wonder she was called "Nuclear Mary." In M at the University of Voronezh, a department was organized, which she also headed. Personality, and therefore a complex and contradictory person, Maria Afanasyevna Levitskaya never knew peace.
It seems that there is not a single area of physics in which she would not try to introduce something new, whether it be electromagnetic fluctuations and physics of solid body, optics and nuclear physics. And, although not all of the plan, she managed to embody, her developments became the basis for the research of her students. Indeed, the significance of the scientist is determined not only by his discoveries, but also by the presence of his own scientific school.
And on the house number 19 on Theater Street, where Maria Afanasyevna lived, a memorial plaque was installed in her honor.
